Zen Training with Eshū
The framework and matrix of Zen training offered through Monarch is my own — it represents considered choices for how a person might approach the tradition and practice of Rinzai Zen with me, and with the Zenwest Sangha. Other teachers may offer other frameworks, and may have different approaches, and those ways and approaches are no less valid than what is offered here. Below, I will lay out this framework as clearly as I can, so that you can engage with it, and consider whether committing to this model of reciprocal relationship and Zen training will be a good path for you to enter onto.
Starting out, two separate choices create the ground where you stand. The first is how you want to relate to me — as a mentee, which is more open and as-needed, or as an apprentice, in a formal training relationship within the Rinzai Zen lineage. The second is whether you want to become a member of the Zenwest Buddhist Society Sangha. You can choose to become a member of the Zenwest Sangha without choosing a formal training relationship with me. You can also choose to be a formal apprentice without becoming a member of Zenwest.
Each of these choices is intended to be intentional. Each choice requires something of you, and each in turn offers different opportunities.
Three relationships
Guest. Zenwest's public practice sessions (like our Tuesday evening at UVic), public Dharma talks, and public ceremonies and events (e.g. Buddha's Birthday) — are open to anyone who wants to attend and participate. There is no expectation of further engagement. You are welcome, and will be received with hospitality, given an orientation so that you can participate and experience the practice, community and teaching. You have not yet chosen to formally step into reciprocal relationship — and that choice will not be assumed.
Member. Membership in Zenwest Buddhist Society is the intentional act of choosing to belong to the Zenwest sangha — to accept the responsibilities and privileges that membership carries. As a member, you have access to Zenwest-hosted Zazenkai and Sesshin, Dharma talks offered within those intensives, and the full range of Zenwest ceremonies. Membership also offers the opportunity to engage with the Religious Authorization Policy and Procedure (RAPP) — but only in conjunction with formal apprenticeship. Membership alone will not engage you with the Zenwest RAPP.
Apprentice. You have chosen to enter into a formal Rinzai Zen training relationship with me. The Shokenko ceremony marks entry into apprenticeship. At present the number of apprentices is limited to twelve. Dokusan — the formal interview — is available for all apprentices. Apprentices who are also members of Zenwest are engaged with the RAPP. Apprenticeship does not require Zenwest membership.
How you train with me
Zen Mentorship — Rinzai Zen-rooted guidance without entering any formal relationship. Periodic meetings, booked as needed to support your independent practice. This might be where you begin if you are discerning, or where you remain if formal apprenticeship is not what you're seeking. $150 + GST per 45-minute meeting.
Apprenticeship — A formal training commitment in the Rinzai Zen tradition, entered through Shokenko. Reciprocal relationship and communication are required. $75 + GST per month; sessions $130 + GST.
